Among the drugs used in pre-anesthetic medication, opioids are appropriate choices and attention should be paid to their adverse effects. Benzodiazepines can be used, but with caution. In induction, propofol and etomidate are the most indicated, to the detriment of dissociatives and barbiturates. In maintenance, the drugs of choice are isofluorane and sevofluorane, since halothane causes major fetal depression.
