Oregano has antioxidant characteristics due to its chemical composition: essential oil (0.15%-0.90%) in the dry plant, its main constituents being phenols: carvacrol, thymol, Y-terpene and p amene, which may vary according to with the locality where it was cultivated. The high levels of these compounds are of great importance for the effectiveness of this plant species.
