It is a disorder of the precorneal tear film, which results in a deficiency of the aqueous fraction or the mucin and/or lipid layers of the tear film, leading to inflammation of the conjunctiva and cornea, pain and reduced vision. The Schirmer tear test (TLS) is considered the main means of diagnosis. There are several causes for the onset of the disease, but the immune-mediated is believed to be the most common. Treatment is usually recommended in the use of tear stimulants and tear mimetics in addition to antimicrobials.
