Abstract

This is a review article on the canine distemper virus, of the Paramixoviridae Family, which causes a multisystemic contagious disease, affecting the respiratory, gastroentestinal and central nervous systems. The basis of the immune response to viral infection is cellular, but a high titer of antibodies is detected a few days after viral contact. Serological tests have been used recently and assist veterinarians in the diagnosis of distemper. The best prevention against the disease is vaccination but these are available in several different types each with its advantages and disadvantages.
