Abstract
The liver has functions of metabolism, excretion and synthesis of some substances important to the body. The most commonly observed signs are anorexia, depression, colic, weight loss, jaundice, dysfunctions in the central nervous system, photosensitization, ventral edema and hemorrhages Liver failure can be caused by toxic plants, infectious, neoplastic causes, by the use of medications. The information collected during anamnesis, complete blood count and biochemical examination (enzymes AST, GGT, Alkaline Phosphatase, SDH) are essential for the diagnosis of the condition. An Apaloosa horse, 12 years old, 436 kg showed signs of acute abdomen on the 19th of March 2011 and was sent to Hospital Veterinário Vicente Borelli located in São João da Boa Vista on the 21st of March of the same year, but without evidence of abdominal pain and with a report of a fracture in the posterior limb two years ago, at which time many medications were administered and a history of progressive weight loss a month ago. Through anamnesis and complementary exams, tubular renal injury and liver failure were diagnosed. The animal received forty liters of intense fluid therapy when it arrived at HOVET. Antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, omeoprazole as gastric protector and an alternative supplementation with albumin and powdered dextrose due to low serum amounts of glucose and albumin were also instituted in this animal.
