Abstract

Brazilian agriculture began in the northeastern region of Brazil in the 16th century, with the creation of the so-called Hereditary Captaincies and the beginning of sugarcane cultivation, a system that was adopted in Brazil by the Portuguese crown. The sugarcane cycle was one of the phases of greatest economic development. For a long time it was the basis of the colonial economy with most trade being done with the European market.
