SOP serves to standardize the execution of fundamental tasks, minimizing the occurrence of errors during activities. In other words, its main purpose is to ensure the correct functioning of internal processes. If it is coherent, the user of the service, whatever the moment in which he is related to the business, will be able to receive quality care or services. In a laboratory, for example, the service provided in the morning will be the same performed in other shifts, performed by different professionals, that is, the SOP for the laboratory allows for greater predictability of results and minimizes variations caused by incompetence and randomness. Constantly offer a quality service to the user, regardless of variables.

The term sustainability has become even more popular since 1987, when the World Commission on Environment and Development of the United Nations used in its report, known as the Brundtland Report, a related term, sustainable development (CLARO; CLARO; AMÂNCIO, 2008 ). Sustainability, according to Verdugo (2010), can be presented as the balance between what is good for people and their communities and what is needed to maintain natural and social resources in order to guarantee the survival of human beings. Sustainable development is responsible for meeting the needs of the present, within ecological limits, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (BRUNDTLAND, 1991) For Tenório (2006) the objective of sustainable development is to grow economically through conservation of the environment and respect for the aspirations of social agents, contributing to improving the lives of the population.
