Failure of passive transfer of immunity (FTIP) is a relatively common immune condition in equines, as the newborn needs maternal antibodies, originating from colostrum, to have immunological protection in the first weeks of life, which is called passive immunity. The antibodies present in colostrum are immunoglobulins and are transferred to the newborn only in the first hours of life through the ingestion of colostrum. This colostrum is formed approximately 30 days before parturition and is essential for the maintenance of the foals' lives, being able to maintain significant serum levels of immunoglobulins up to 90 days of life. In many cases, the newborn foal does not ingest colostrum or ingests a small volume, and this may be related to several factors, from difficulty in standing up, difficulty in suckling, pre-existing diseases from intrauterine life and even failure in the production of colostrum by the mare. Failure to ingest colostrum results in FTIP and can lead to dehydration, hypoglycemia and later to infections or even sepsis, in the first hours of life. In these cases, the foal may die if not treated quickly. Therefore, this study aims to report a case of FTIP in a newborn horse treated at the UNIFEOB Veterinary Center.

    Rhodococcus Equi em potros
(Centro Universitário da Fundação de Ensino Octávio Bastos, 2022-09-09) ALEM, Hionara Isys; NOVAIS, Maria Eduarda Lopes; PESSINATTI, Bárbara Dezotti
Rhodococcus is a disease of worldwide distribution caused by Rhodococcus equi. It is responsible for high mortality rates and great economic losses, regardless of race, sex or breeding system. It leads to severe bronchopneumonia in foals under six months of age due to their immunological immaturity. Diagnosis and treatment are based on a multimodal approach seeking ultrasound evidence suggestive of pyogranulomas, ultrasound abscess scores, and laboratory findings, including plasma fibrinogen concentrations, blood biochemical tests, and platelet and leukocyte counts.

Persistência do úraco em potros: revisão bibliográfica
(Fundação de Ensino Octávio Bastos, 2022-09-09) ALCANTARA, Isadora Novelli de; VERONEZI, Nathália Giovana; PESSINATTI, Bárbara Dezotti
One of the most common complications in foals is the persistence of urachus, it affects about 6% of newborns and can develop within days or even weeks after birth. This non-regression of the fetal urinary tract, which under normal circumstances is obliterated soon after birth, causes the elimination of urine to take place through the navel. The most common clinical signs are moist and swollen umbilical region and dripping of urine through the navel, sporadically or during urination. Diagnosis is based on inspection, palpation and confirmed by ultrasound examination. Treatment should be initiated using broad-spectrum antibiotics, cleaning and disinfection of the region and, in non-responsive cases, surgical correction.

Cesarean surgery is generally an emergency procedure, and the anesthetic technique used must be safe for both mother and fetuses. The pregnant female has some physiological particularities, including cardiovascular changes, in respiratory function and gastroenteric system. Among the drugs used in pre-anesthetic medication, opioids are appropriate choices and attention should be paid to their adverse effects. Benzodiazepines can be used, but with caution. In induction, propofol and etomidate are the most indicated, to the detriment of dissociatives and barbiturates. In maintenance, the drugs of choice are isofluorane and sevofluorane, since halothane causes major fetal depression. Regional anesthesia techniques, such as epidural anesthesia, are of great value, greatly improving fetal vigor and decreasing the amount of inhaled anesthetic for pregnant women.
