More and more companies are trying to minimize their environmental impacts. This is because the growing awareness of consumers shows that future requirements in relation to the preservation of the environment and quality of life should be intensified. In view of this, some companies have been incorporating the environmental variable in the development of their activities, as one of the crucial requirements of their social responsibility. Other companies are aware of the growing concern for the environmental issue and do not take steps to minimize its impacts. For such companies, the idea prevails that any action taken in relation to the environmental variable will generate an increase in expenses and, consequently, an increase in production costs. Some of these impacts began to be understood recently with the emergence of ecological thinking. In Brazil today, the generation of electric energy from hydroelectric plants accounts for seventy-five percent of the installed capacity (ANEEL, 2008).
