The objective of this study was to evaluate some pre-weaning characteristics related to performance and morphometry in Santa Inês breed sheep, reared in a complete confinement regime in the Mantiqueira Paulista region. 59 animals were used, being 31 whole males and 28 females, of the Santa Inês breed, bred and handled in an intensive breeding system. The pre-weaning productive performances observed in this work, when compared to the post-weaning performance reported in the literature, indicate that it will not be difficult to reach the post-weaning performance rates observed in other intensive production systems.

This work aimed to analyze the morphology of embryos at seven days of development, produced in the laboratory from oocytes aspirated from three different classes of donors of the Santa Inês race (multiparous, primiparous and prepubertal). The analyzed embryos had a discoid shape and were delimited by the pellucid zone (ZP). In the morula and initial blastocyst stages, the ZP measured from 5 to 10 μm in thickness, revealing to be thinner in the expanded blastocyst phase. In general, the structure and ultrastructure of Santa Inês sheep embryos, originating from in vitro fertilization (IVF) and evaluated in this study, corroborate many of the observations by Colarco and Mclaren (1976), Ferrer et al. (1995) and Coccero et al. (2002). The most striking aspect was the intense uniform distribution of lipid inclusions in the cytoplasm of the blastomeres, both in the internal cell mass and in the trophoblastic cells, regardless of the origin of the oocyte, suggesting that the morphology seems to be conditioned mainly to the culture system employed, which seems to favor the accumulation of intracellular lipids.

The present study aims to provide morphological subsidies that can contribute to research in the processes of biotechnology of reproduction, as well as in vitro fertilization, cloning and obtaining stem cells, since this process in carnivores is complex and complicated. Therefore, our proposal aims at describing the structures and evolution of fetal membranes in dogs, including the process of involution of the yolk sac.

Diabetes mellitus, also known as insulin-dependent diabetes, is a metabolic disorder characterized by hypoinsulinemia, meaning the animal's inability to maintain glycemic control. It is the result of the loss of function of the cells of the pancreas, which are responsible for the production of insulin. With the fall of the circulating hormone, it is difficult to transport glucose from the blood to most cells, generating an increase in gluconeogenesis, hepatic glycogenolysis and production of ketone bodies. Cataracts are an important problem in ophthalmology and common in cases of dogs with diabetes mellitus, since glucose saturation directly interferes with osmolarity through sorbitol inside the lens. Cataracts are the opacification of the lens resulting in loss of vision in the affected eye, which is usually bilateral in cases of diabetogenic cataracts and which can result not only in problems with visual impairment, but also in relevant secondary problems including even the loss of the eyeball. Unfortunately, there is no medication available for the treatment of cataracts, but in the case of diabetogenic cataracts, there are drugs that inhibit the enzyme aldose reductase and cause the cataract process to minimize its progression. However, the only viable treatment is surgical, with aspiration / dissection, intracapsular facetomy and phacoemulsification techniques being available to solve the problem.
