    Caseous lymphadenitis is a contagious disease caused by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, which mainly affects sheep and goats. The microorganism penetrates the animal through lesions on the skin or mucous membranes and eventually lodges in the lymph nodes of the affected region. Animals that do not have internal abscesses do not show any clinical signs except for the presence of swelling and abscess of one or more peripheral lymph nodes. Most antibiotics do not penetrate the abscess capsule. Individual treatment of animals involves drainage and surgical removal of abscesses. Eradicating caseous lymphadenitis in herds is very difficult.
