According to the Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - DSM-5 (APA, 2014), autism is characterized as a neurodevelopmental disorder, with deficits in social, communicative and behavioral skills. Therefore, interventions based on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) are needed, with a focus on gaining skills and managing disruptive behaviors. ABA originates from the behaviorist field, but specifically from Skinner's studies, being described as a science that "observes, analyzes and explains the association between the environment, human behavior and learning" (LEAR, 2004, p. 4).
