Negative energy balance is a condition that occurs at the beginning of the lactation period, when high production animals are not able to consume enough to meet their nutritional requirements, due to the high utilization of nutrients for lactogenesis. The accumulation of body fat has an influence on metabolism in the period of initiation of lactation, reducing the impacts of diet deficiency. However, animals with a high body condition score tend to suffer more from negative energy balance, resulting in exacerbated catabolic processes, in addition to reproductive dysfunction. The increase in non-esterified fatty acids in the circulation, resulting from lipolysis, leads to an increase in circulating ketone bodies, characterizing a condition of ketosis.

(Fundação de Ensino Octávio Bastos, 2019-09-18) MAGALHÃES FILHO, Everton Luis; FIGUEIREDO, Cristiane Leite
Brazil has the largest herd of buffaloes in the West and buffalo farming is an area of strong growth in the country. Official data indicate that in our country approximately 1,382 million heads of Murrah, Jafarabadi, Mediterranean and Carabao buffaloes are raised. This species is a major producer of meat in the national territory, but it also has a large market for the exploitation of its milk, which has a high yield and quality compared to bovine milk due to its characteristics, making it ideal for making a large variety of dairy products.
