The basis of the immune response to viral infection is cellular, but a high titer of antibodies is detected a few days after viral contact. Serological tests have been used recently and assist veterinarians in the diagnosis of distemper. Dandruff is a very infectious disease found in horses, mules and monkeys, which can be transmitted to humans. The acute form is characterized by fever and septicemia, leading the animal to death in a few days. Chronic disease can occur in horses with ulcerative nodules on the skin and nodules on the lungs and nasal cavity. Treatment is based on antibiotics such as aminoglycosides.
